The Internet protocol (IP) address 192.168.l.l is associated with broadband or wireless routers. Going to 192.168.l.l will often connect your directly to the router being used for Internet access. The address was first used for the line of Linksys routers. It has since been adopted by a few major manufacturers.

The address is set during router installation. A large number of routers today use 192.168.l.l as a default address although this is not universal. It is important to note that 192.168.1.1 can be changed to another address through the router settings.



The 192.168.1.1 address is actually private. A private IP address means that it is not visible to the public even when connected to the Internet.

No one can connect to 192.168.1.1 from outside of the local home or business network without special software or hardware. Unlike public Internet addresses, 192.168.1.1 can actually be assigned to more than one device in a home or office. The reality is that most people just leave the address assigned to the router exclusively.

Connecting to 192.168.1.1 simply requires entering the numbers into a browser address bar. The browser will then attempt to connect to the router. If the connection is successful, then most people will see a graphical menu that allows you to change everything from the router password to small technical details about the signal. Technicians often use 192.168.1.1 to diagnose and repair router problems.

There are a few reasons why entering 192.168.1.1 will not do anything. One reason is if the router is off or is malfunctioning. Another reason 192.168.1.1 might not work is if the router uses a different private address. The 192.168.1.1 address is usually the best place to start when troubleshooting problems with a router.
